The ASTM A871 specification defines high-strength, low-alloy structural steel plates designed for use in tubular structures and poles, offering atmospheric corrosion resistance. Grades 60 and 65 are available in as-rolled, normalized, or quenched and tempered conditions, tailored to meet specific mechanical property requirements. A minimum ASTM G101 Corrosion Resistance Index of 6.0 is mandated.
ASTM A871-65 is a high strength low-alloy structural steel plate with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. This specification provides for a 65ksi minimum yield strength and an 80ksi minimum tensile strength plus the atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel in most environments is substantially better than that of carbon steels with or without copper addition. When properly designed and exposed to the atmosphere, this steel can be used bare (unpainted) for many applications.
ASTM A871 Grade 60 is a high strength structural steel that shows improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. This low alloy ASTM A871 grade 60 steel plate material can form a protective rust like layer on the surface when exposed to weather elements. Thus, ASTM A871 grade 60 plates do not need additional coating.

ASTM A871 Steel Plate Overview:
- Available in two grades: 60 and 65.
- May be provided as-rolled, normalized or quenched and tempered.
- Thicknesses greater than 1 1/4" may be special ordered, but are not regularly stocked in our distribution centers.
Compare ASTM A871 grade 60 and 65
- Grade 65 is slightly stronger than Grade 60, as the former has min yield strength of 450 Mpa and for the latter, it is 415 MPa.
- ASTM A871 HSLA steel grade 60 plates is more widely available than grade 65 plates.
